WPWeekly Episode 240 – Interview With Matt Mullenweg 2016

In this episode of WordPress Weekly, Marcus Couch and I are joined by Matt Mullenweg, co-founder of the open source software project known as WordPress. In this one hour and thirty minute interview, we cover a wide range of topics including:

  • How the death of his father has altered the things he does and thinks about on a day-to-day basis.
  • Status update on the WordPress Foundation and outreach programs that are in the works.
  • Reasons for purchasing Thesis.com.
  • His thoughts on requiring themes in the WordPress theme directory to be accessible ready before being approved.
  • Why he’s not leading the release of WordPress 4.7.
  • In-depth discussion on the recommended WordPress hosting page and the criteria that needs to be met in order to be listed. This branched off into a discussion about EIG and their role in the webhosting space.
  • Reasons why the REST API is taking longer to complete than what some people may have initially thought.
  • The progress towards 51% marketshare. (Mullenweg says there’s a team inside of Automattic called Team 51 dedicated to this goal.)
  • What he thinks about when he has time alone.

We also talk about a number of other subjects but you’ll have to listen to the show to find out what they are. I highly encourage you to listen as it’s packed with information, humor, and a bit of WordPress history.

Plugins Picked By Marcus:

VRView makes it easy to embed Google’s VRView into WordPress. It allows you to embed 360° videos, Virtual Reality videos, and panorama photos into WordPress.

Attachment Taxonomies adds Tag and Category taxonomies to the WordPress media library offering new ways to organize media. By default, these taxonomies, although sharing the same names and behavior, are separate from the default post taxonomies, but this can easily be changed if desired.

WP Discourse acts as a bridge between Discourse and WordPress. It allows you to:

  • Publish WordPress posts to Discourse.
  • Use Discourse to generate comments and discussion for WordPress posts.
  • Select which comments are displayed on the WordPress site based on post score and commenter trust level.
  • Use your WordPress site as the Single Sign On provider for your Discourse forum.

  1. Hi Jeff

Totally agree the Customizer comments at 1:05:00 (ish) and the comments about the frustrated theme purchase. So, I hooked up with a coder and we are now days (maybe a couple of weeks) away from a release to totally address this. Spent 18 months coding this so far.

  2. Thanks for the shoutout to WP-Discourse! I didn’t read the shownotes before listening to the episode so that was a nice surprise ;)

We haven’t officially announced the plugin on the WordPress directory yet because there’s actually another major version bump pending release, but people keep discovering it organically, heh. The plugin has been around since March 2013, but we just didn’t make a concerted effort to make it polished and stable enough for the WP plugins directory until now.

Would be happy to talk more at length to you about it once we’re ready for a proper show & tell.
