Flywheel Hosting Secures $1.2M In Funding

At this time last year, Flywheel Hosting opened its doors to the public. Today, the company announced it has secured $1.2M in seed funding. The round was led by Linseed Capital, with participation from the Nebraska Angels, Ludlow Ventures out of Detroit, Lightbank and Hyde Park Venture Partners out of Chicago, and Rose Paul Ventures out of NYC.

Flywheel will use the funding to expand their team and infrastructure. Also as part of the announcement, Flywheel now offers bulk pricing plans. Bulk pricing starts with 10 sites with 150,000 visits for $100 a month and 25 sites with 500,000 visits for $250 a month. Flywheel hosting plans for small sites begin at $15 a month for sites with 5,000 visits. Since the customer base is mainly website designers and agencies, these new plans make sense, especially for managing all of their client sites in one location.

Managing A Growth Phase

Some customers of WPEngine have suggested that the company’s rapid growth resulted in lackluster support and reliable service during the height of its popularity. Earlier this year, an article on the WPEngine blog entitled Growth Is Hard, explained the growing pains the company experienced.

I asked the co-founder and CEO of Flywheel, Dusty Davidson, how he plans to manage the next phase of Flywheel.

We’re very aware of how hard it is to scale a support organization. We’re investing heavily in great people, great automation, tools, and other things to do our absolute best to provide the level of support that our customers have come to expect. It’s core to our mission to provide service at that level, even at scale and we’ll do what it takes to accomplish that.

It’s rare to see so many people compliment a webhosting provider but that’s what I’ve witnessed over the past year. Through Twitter, WordCamps, and other venues, customers appear to be unanimously happy with Flywheel. It will be interesting to see if the company can scale at a fast rate while maintaining their signature level of quality service and support.

Tell Us About Your Experience With FlyWheel

With so many companies in the managed WordPress hosting market, it’s encouraging to see a startup proving to be a hit amongst its customers. Instead of going after everyone, FlyWheel has carved out a niche within the market and is doing well. 1. Great news for Flywheel! I currently have 6 sites hosted with Flywheel and I don’t have a single complaint. In fact, I’ve had stellar customer support from day one and I ask plenty of questions that might drive some hosting companies batty.

I’m excited for them and hope this just means bigger and better things for them and for their customers. WELL DESERVED!

  2. I am new customer – meaning like two days and switched one site only as a test and I must say – wow – what an improvement in the performance of the WordPress site.

I had this site on a shared hosting service here in New Zealand and have been having issues with bad gateways and internal server errors for over three weeks because of an upgrade they did on their servers. Took their support desk three weeks to sort my issues out.

Seeing this site was a test site before going live it became a nightmare to try and finish on their servers. So I started from scratch with flywheel and it took me one day to set everything up including importing a database file for 2,000 products and flywheel’s site just did not miss a beat. By four o’clock that day the site was up and running, the domain name had picked up their DNS settings and it was live.

Just to check – I came back this morning and went to the site – and bam it was on my screen in an instant and that’s from NZ.

Comment, painless, worth $15.00 month USD, great help files and more than worth considering should you be using WordPress only for your web sites. I will be seriously considering switching my other site over to them.

    • Congratulations to them and good luck to their future.

However, I have to agree with your SSL statement. SSL is now a ranking signal for Google search so having to pay for SSL ability is really not good. In future it is most likely going to be a stronger signal also so people should consider that.

Infact in our business, reseller and VPS packages we include SSL certificates for free!
