Hi, This is what I got from the Automattic team: “Free transfer isn’t possible because those fees are determined by the service you are transferring the domain to. We are working on allowing users to connect the domain or subdomain to other services and full DNS access.”

I don’t know all the canonical plugins but WP-CLI, MP6, Gutenberg, and REST API were all canonical projects. I’ll let you know if I find more documentation.

I understand your concern. But if you go through my articles, you will see that I always try to cover both sides and highlight a range of opinions. And if you feel I’ve overlooked any important points, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
