Obama Foundation Launches New Website Powered by WordPress
The Obama Foundation launched its new WordPress-powered website today. The future presidential center, which will be located in Chicago, will manage projects both in the city and other places around the world.
“More than a library or a museum, it will be a living, working center for citizenship,” President Obama said. “That’s why we want to hear from you. Tell us what you want this project to be and tell us what’s on your mind.”
The website integrates the Typeform service for collecting feedback from citizens on their hopes and dreams, as well as the people and organizations that inspire them.
WordPress developers were excited to see that the former President is using the WP REST API introduced in WordPress 4.7.

The custom theme for the Obama Foundation is built using ZURB’s Foundation as its front-end framework. It integrates the jQuery Cycle Plugin for galleries.
The website was created by Blue State Digital, an agency that got its start on the campaign trail and now focuses on serving causes and brands.
President Obama is the first president to select WordPress for his presidential center website.

Not sure if he is tech savvy enough to make the selection. But it is nice to have some important figure to “endorse” WordPress.

Interesting tech choices. We definitely like the choice of Zurb 6.3. We have been using Zurb for years a love it. It also helps that they are local to us, so we can drop in for discussions, pizza & beer.

I love WP <3

Am not sure he even knows the platform the website is built on. He just probably gave a contract to a programmer who happens to be WP inclined. WordPress is still awesome all the same and don’t think it needs any further endorsement by anyone.

Um. He most likely wasn’t involved in any of the technical decisions or contracting. So, a big shout out to the low-level project manager who decided to find a web designer who decided to use WordPress for the former president’s foundation website. Way to go, Mr. (or Ms.) whoever-you-are! You ROCK!

The first American President, certainly not the first President.
In 2014 we were subcontracted to rebuild the site of the President Hadi of Yemen: https://presidenthadi-gov-ye.info/en/

Piet – I am referring to a Presidential library website – after a president leaves office, they establish a presidential library or center: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidential_library

I doubt Obama said: “I want you to use WordPress to build this website” but still good news.

It also uses Timber and Twig!

I admire Obama, I think he made an excellent Presidency, left a deficit higher than what he inherited. Not everything in life is money.
Human life has more dignity.
Dignified human rights. I think it leaves a great legacy of humility and equality for the planet.
If he chose WordPress, he chose it very well.

What kind of content setup do you guys think is used for this site? For example the Our Story page (https://www.obama.org/our-story/).
My guess is a combination of Custom Post Types with the Advanced Custom Fields Plugin. But I’m not sure and it would be great to know :)
