As social media empires rise and fall, proven technologies remain relevant. We are all attracted to the latest communication apps, like crows to shiny objects. But legacy technologies like email, forums, blogs, and podcasts continue to demonstrate the enduring benefit of open platforms and protocols. Congratulations to WP Tavern for embracing another open platform to keep the conversation flowing.

An unread posts widget would be useful. I’m not sure there’s a suitable one for bbPress or not; they tend to be resource intensive unless coded well.
I like that there’s only a small number of forums here. People tend to crazy and it becomes a mess with just a bunch of dead forums.

I also think you should ditch the “Your reply is awaiting moderation” message. If spam is a problem, then there are less invasive methods of handling that.
I wouldn’t have even thought it was necessary at this point. Forums tend to attract spam later, not when they’re brand new.

I think this will be a great place to discuss all the WordPress matters. Please consider to add a forum about SEO.As SEO changing often it would be nice to talk about recent and upcoming changes.

Federate this forum! It would be awesome if it were possible to display the content in the forum on other public places, such as Lemmy. https://join-lemmy.org/
This would allow us to use this forum directly, but also make the discussions that happen on this forum display in other places organically.
It might be as simple as using the ActivityPub plugin, but might end up requiring some kind of customization between ActivityPub and BBPress.

There is no link in the site menu to the forums. I think that’ll be needed for those who don’t know what the URL is, or that these even exist.
Redirecting /forum/ and /discussion/ to /forums/ is probably a good idea too, for anyone who tries to navigate here directly.

2 things immediately come to mind:
I think a toolbar of some sorts would be useful here, so one can easily insert links or
blockquoteelements like above without knowing HTML. Better yet, maybe this input field could use the block editor, like in the WordPress.org support forums!As the forums grow, it may also be useful to display a list of popular threads in the footer of wptavern.com.

Oh, and by allowing direct hotlinking of images here, you are allowing us to run statistics tracking on the forum. I’m not doing that, but if you hadn’t thought of it, then it’s a good thing to know. It’s generally better to copy the images to your own server and serve from there.
You can also run into weird problems with people linking objectionable material in the forum. For example, I put an image in a post a few minutes ago, but I could easily set it to display as something normal for the USA, but switch the image out for the rest of the world and instead display an advertisement or some other objectionable image and you wouldn’t know about it unless someone mentioned it to you.

It’s unclear what tools we have available for styling our posts. I took a potshot guess that since it’s bbPress, that we could use an
tag and it worked, but if I didn’t know how bbPress worked, I wouldn’t have known to try that.

I think it would be best to remove the admin bar. I don’t think it serves a purpose, since we don’t have access to anything from within the admin panel.

You can do that in your account settings, “Toolbar” on or off.

Subscribe topic and the “Mark Favorite” Button are disabled at the individual topic level. If this is intentional, we can also remove them from the profile section.

Hi, great to see a new forum. What about the separate topic for WordPress Theme/Plugin Development, where we can ask more technical questions or share some code? Do you think that it would be a nice addition? or maybe it’s unnecessary since there’s already stackoverflow for that.

I don’t know if the “Site and Block Editor” forum would be the most appropriate, but I’d like to have a place to showcase new work and ask for suggestions on how to improve it.

The edit post button in the admin bar doesn’t work. Perhaps it should be replaced with an edit button on the post/reply itself so that we can edit it inline in the page.

I don’t get notifications (via email) on threads that I check the ‘notify box’ on. Does it work for anyone else?

The ability to link to a specific comment would be useful, too. I know we can add a link to a specific section of the page using Google Chrome, but it’s not universal.

What about a more powerful search? AJAX, select specific users, categories, and topics are all useful functions.
There are some good BB Press plugins that can do that out of the box (Ajax Search and GD Power Search come to mind).
