WordPress.com Adds oEmbed Support For CartoDB Maps

WordPress.com now supports oEmbeds for CartoDB, a tool used to create and share interactive maps. Simply copy and paste a CartoDB map URL into the WordPress.com post editor and a live preview will display. Here’s an example of a map using the standard HTML embed code.

According to an announcement on the official CartoDB blog, embed support has also been added to Jetpack. However, I discovered after testing that it’s not yet supported. I reached out to Jetpack’s development team to find out when it will be added, but they’re not available until March 16th.

With more than 60 million users, CartoDB has an incredible opportunity to expand its reach by being accessible on a platform where over 409 million people view more than 17.6 billion pages each month.

  1. To be fair, the blog post did mention “it will soon be possible to add CartoDB maps to your self-hosted WordPress.org via Jetpack.” :)

As Andrew mentioned above, Jetpack support is coming soon. Support for it was added to Jetpack master 3 days ago, so it will land to the masses in the next Jetpack update.
