Christina Warren @Andrew Nacin – I 100% agree. In fact, I’ve been running and auto-update plugin for a while that does not only WP updates but also plugin updates automatically. Love it. For certain users, yes, have a hook or flag that can be changed inside the config files — but don’t cop-out to a user-facing checkbox. Having said all this, the fact that plugins could potentially break during an auto-update indicates that it might be nice if auto-updates could be configured to work with some sort of snapshot backup plugin (existing or new), in the event that something DOES happen. Still, plugin standards have improved a bunch in the last few years, to the point that I can’t remember the last time something broke on an update. Maybe including a method to disable all plugins before updating, then re-enable (and not re-enable if something pops up with an error?) could work. Obviously the worst-case scenario for a WordPress update gone awry is that a user can’t login to their Dashboard b/c of an autoupdate — something that isn’t really possible if Chrome or Firefox updates break an extension.
