Obviously at the current state of the plugin with explicit warning against using it on production this goal is not going to be achieved in 2018. I, and many other people, complain about how backward compatibility holds back wordpress (php 5.2 anyone?). It will be hypocritical for all those people to shoot down GB just because it breaks backward compat. The problem for me is not that there will be a reduced or broken experience for some sites, the problem is that there is no forward path, supported with explicit APIs, right now for yoast and anybody else to rewrite its metabox in GB compliant way even if he is willing to put the resources into it.
