Rarst If one will need a plugin to get metaboxes working, then Metabox API is defacto deprecated and backwards compatibility is broken. In a rather major way too. Something that was asked very very explicitly and was denied. Which is not end of the world really. But all the spinning of this is exhausting. We need to hear less of “but it going to be sooo cool” and more of: 1. Yes, sites are going to be broken 2. Yes, eternal backwards compatibility in WordPress is over 3. Here is how we are going to handle this break… 4. Here is how we are going to handle breaks in general going forward…
