Rarst I find it incredulous the difference between the lengths WordPress goes to please users and its expectation that developer engagement just falls from the sky unprompted. Yes, Customizer is important for cheap/DIY segment of users, which fuels WP’s market share, and Matt did tell everyone to learn JavaScript. Why would any of this matter to a developer?.. Customizer is irrelevant to any other segment… Wait, it might not be… but if so it’s failing horribly at explaining its value to other use cases. WP market share doesn’t always benefit developers directly and symmetrically. In some ways it had been things worse for them by endlessly pushing for free things and devaluing to users what developers do and what it costs. If your learning strategy is to do what Matt tells you… Welp. The lack of developer engagement is not a problem with developers. It’s a problem with WordPress.
