Albert I think a project the size of WordPress should not really try to impress or wow anyone in a new release. WordPress is an established piece of software, does things in a certain way, and does most of them well. People are used to a workflow they are familiar with. To me it’s perfectly fine if WP goes along this route and provides incremental improvements over time, without trying to impress anyone, but consistently keep it well positioned in the world of database-driven PHP CMS. It’s winning in this market because of reasons which are completely unrelated to the realm of innovating or wow. There are tons of projects that try to innovate in the field of CMS, we can mention Grav (https://getgrav.org), PageKit (https://pagekit.com) and others too. They can take more innovative and refreshing approaches because they have a much lighter userbase, and they are not afraid to move fast (but keep things running, as Zuck used to say), a thing that WordPress cannot do any more due to its enormous ecosystem of plugins and themes.
