Peter Yes. The only thing that keeps WP alive is plugins and themes. Simply beacause WP core is a piece of undefineable code. I mean it is not a blogging platform nor is it a real CMS. I have the impression even core has lost focus. As a dev it tends to become frustrating that even for a blog i need 3-4 plugins (security&social related), not to speak about a simple website. Actually REST API is not a big stuff either. That way one can use API syntax instead of calling wp functions in the template files. For a limited selection of wp functions. API is not bad but there is nothing more you could do with rest api as without it. The bad is we never seem to get better media organisation, decent search options, content delivery in multiple languages, etc. Instead of such useful improvements we always get tons of marginal stuff like shiny updates, bacon emoji, etc.
