WPWeekly Episode 326 – Long Live the Fields API Project

In this episode, John James Jacoby and I are joined by Scott Kingsley Clark, lead developer of the Pods framework. Clark describes what it was like to lead the Fields API project, the difficulties of working hard on a project and not getting core buy-in, and why building the Fields API into core first would have made the transition to Gutenberg easier for users and developers.

He looks back and describes what he possibly could have done differently and provides an update on Pods Framework’s compatibility with Gutenberg. To wrap up the show, Clark played us a song on his electric ukulele. To hear more tunes from Clark, check out his channel on SoundCloud.

  1. I enjoyed this episode. The one thing that really stood out to me was the lack of support that Scott was getting for the API. I could not help but wonder of his self-professed shyness and discomfort in group may have had something to do with that. After all, getting folks to pay attention involves a little bit if salesmanship.

Sometimes schmoozing and getting folks talking is as important as chasing around every code integration point.

Also, given the fact the WP is pushing Gutenberg, a feature no one was asking for over many other that people are dying for (I’m looking at you Media Library), maybe the WP leadership’s instincts aren’t that great, Squarespace and Wiz nothwithstanding.
