WPWeekly Episode 220 – Automattic’s Relationship With WordPress

In this episode of WordPress Weekly, Marcus Couch and I discuss the latest news in the WordPress ecosystem. On the first episode of 2016, I rant about the conspiracy theorists who believe Automattic owns and controls the WordPress project.

I try to set the record straight and explain why it’s not the case. Later in the show, Marcus explains what AMP is and why site owners need to pay attention to it. Last but not least are his plugin picks of the week.

Stories Discussed:

WordPress 4.4.1 Patches XSS Security Vulnerability
WordPress.org Added 910 New Themes in 2015
63% of WordPress Core Committers Are Not Employed by Automattic
WordCamp Miami 2016 Adds New JavaScript Track, Freelancer’s Workshop, and Kids Panel
LoopConf in 2016

Plugins Picked By Marcus:

IP Login enables you to login from a trusted IP without entering a password by specifying ?bypass_login=username in the browser’s address bar.

Slide Anything allows you to create a carousel where the content for each slide can include, images, text, HTML, and shortcodes.

WP Smart Export (Free Version) is a smart and highly customizable data exporter for outputting posts and user data that you can read.

  1. On behalf of the Bilderberg Group, Illuminati, the committer cabal, Forbes 30 under 30 alumni, World Economic Forum, and the Freemasons, I’d like to thank you for convincing the world that Automattic doesn’t run WordPress.

  2. I think it’s a little unfair to group everyone who’s confused about the Automattic/WordPress relationship as conspiracy theorists. There is a huge overlap in employees/committers. The CEO of Automattic is leading an upcoming release cycle, and through Audrey Capital he personally employs non-Automattic folks who work on WordPress…not to mention owning this site and employing you, Jeff (something you have to scroll to the bottom of the About page to figure out).

I love WP and I think y’all do great work, but the delineations are pretty obscured.
