WordPress Cape Town to Host Charity Hackathon in August

WordPress Cape Town is the largest and most active meetup group in South Africa with members gathering for regular meetups, workshops and an annual WordCamp. The group is dedicated to giving back to the community and announced that they will be hosting their first charity hackathon on Saturday, August 23.

The event is called do_action( ‘wordpress-charity-hackathon’ ); and will be dedicated to building websites for Cape Town-based charities. The organizers have selected the following nine charities for which they will build brand new WordPress-powered sites:

  • Greater Good SA
  • The UPliftment Programme
  • The Equinox Trust
  • Care Career Connection
  • Uhambo Foundation
  • National Institute for the Deaf
  • St. Luke’s Hospice
  • Stellenbosch Voedingsaksie / Feeding in Action
  • SANCCOB

At the end of the day, each charity will have a new online presence customized according to the organization’s individual needs, such as attracting volunteers, selling physical products, accepting donations, etc.

Volunteers can sign up for any of the nine teams. This is a huge undertaking and it’s not just for developers. WordPress Cape Town invites designers, project managers, content creators, social media managers and developers to apply to participate.

Participants will need to bring their own laptops and have a GitHub account. Developers are required to have a local development environment setup before arriving. The organizers recommend using VVV and have a short guide published on the WordPress Cape Town site.

Do Action: WordPress Charity Hackathon is sponsored by Hetzner, PayFast, and WooThemes, three local companies that will be providing snacks, coffee, lunch and a celebratory dinner in the evening. If you are in the Cape Town area and have skills to volunteer, sign up for the charity hackathon. This is a rare chance to put your WordPress skills to good use while collaborating with other talented folks to help promote Cape Town charities.
