WordCamp Europe 2017 Will Be in Paris, France, June 16-18

WordCamp Europe took place over the weekend in Vienna with nearly 1900 attendees on the ground and more than 1,000 tickets claimed for live streaming. The event received 150 micro-sponsorships and support from more companies than ever before.

During the closing remarks, lead organizer Petya Raykovska announced that WordCamp Europe 2017 will be held in Paris, France, June 16-18 at The Docks. The team is moving the event back a week in hopes of avoiding the brutal summer heat. Raykovska will pass the torch to Paolo Belcastro, who will lead WCEU with help from local team lead Jenny Beaumont.

The application process for WCEU host cities began in December 2015. According to Raykovska, the core organizing team had a difficult time selecting from the three excellent applications that were submitted from Paris, Porto, and Krakow.

Raykovska said that the Paris and Porto applications were strongest, because the local teams had volunteered previously at WordCamp Europe. As the camp grows larger, having an experienced local team has become a more important factor for selection.

“Between Paris and Porto, the decision was not that hard because, unfortunately, the venue the Porto team had chosen, did not have any capacity for the event to grow from this year’s numbers,” Raykovska said. “It’s top capacity was 2000 people and that would basically mean we would need to ask 200 people who bought tickets this year that they would not be able to come.”

While the Porto team was very well prepared and had selected a stunning venue, Raykovska said that the smaller venue capacity made it easy for the core team to select Paris.

“We want to organize WordCamp Europe in every European city that has an active community, but for now it can only be in one place per year,” she said. Raykovska shared with the audience what the leadership team looks for in the host city:

  • A strong, experienced local team
  • Active local community
  • Location
  • Preparation
  • Volunteered at WCEU

The website for the 2017 event is up and ticket sales are already open. Attendance at WordCamp Europe has grown every year and organizers fully expect that 2017 event will be even larger. The first 2,000 tickets are now on sale and organizers have the capacity to make more available as needed.

  1. I’ve been meaning to attend WordCamp Europe for couple of years now, but couldn’t attend due to this time schedule every year. As a muslim, WC Europe helds every year in the month of Ramadan (the holy month for muslim, requires fasting), and which is kinda impossible to travel to.

In 2017, Ramadan will be held from 26th May – 25th June. It would’ve been possible to attend outside of this boundary.

Not that anyone will care, just wanted to let everyone know.

    • I don’t think WCs should be moved around because of religious times, Most days of the year it is a religious time for at least some people.

NOT SAYING YOU SHOULDN’T PRACTICE YOUR RELIGION.

If you don’t mind me asking. what does fasting have to do with going to Paris? Don’t have to answer if you don’t want to.

        • There will be a lot of things which are incompatible between the WordPress Community and Islam. For example women in Saudi Arabia can not drive cars or women in Iran can’t attend football matches in stadium. Now in these cases you will have to clearly choose on whose camp you are on as you can’t be on both. The WordPress community clearly stands with the LGBT community and believes in Equality where as in ISlam you can get stoned to death in many countries where Sharia is the law of the land. Now as a practicing muslim are you going to choose Islamic values over WordPress values? Your turn.

          • I didn’t bring compatibility questions between Islam and WordPress community. There is nothing to compare, they are entirely different things.
So you don’t have to complicate the discussion bringing things you don’t understand clearly. I am not going to discuss about Islamic values, what brings or what not. It was just a request to shift the date a bit, I don’t hope it’ll happen, was just mentioning the reason why I couldn’t attend even I wanted to.

        • @Andrea Why the need to escalate things into some sort of attack? You don’t even know the person, their background or what their beliefs are. You clearly have strong opinions on the matter. Those would probably be best served expressed elsewhere. Since you brought up “WordPrsss values”… This is a WordPress focused site, atacking someone’s religion isn’t exactly “WordPress values” either.

        • @Andrea The WordPress community and foundation stands for equality; regardless of religion, race, sex, gender identity, or even OS preferences.

Your statements ostracizing people based on their religion instead of their willingness for participation is exactly what the community and foundation stand against.

    • While the WCEU dates for 2017 may not be ideal for you, Ramadan in 2018 is 16th May – 14th June, so assuming a similar date for the WCEU 2018 as 2017 or 2016, it should be somewhat easier for you to attend.

There are lots of factors involved with choosing a specific date for a WordCamp – existing WordCamps and other tech conferences, special events, and of course the availability of the desired venue. WordCamp London even waits until the football fixtures are announced so we don’t choose a weekend when Arsenal are playing at home, as our venue is very close to their stadium. I’d guess that the anticipated weather isn’t the sole reason for picking the WCEU 2016 dates that unfortunately clash with Ramadan.

    • If anything is ignorant it’s attacking someone and claiming they don’t know enough about their own religion.

He knows full well when the dates for Ramadan are because he included them in his comment. He also never said he fasts 24/7, but rather from sunset to sundown during that time period.

He never claimed discrimination. He hasn’t screamed and yelled and started a petition for WordCamp Europe to change their dates. He was simply giving his 2 cents on the dates with no expectations that they’d be changed.

I’m not sure why people feel the need to come out of the woodwork with rude and ignorant comments attacking him for it.

      Grow the hell up.

    • You just eat later than usually during ramadan and then you gorge on food. From reports it seems to be the gorging that causes issues. Personally I do fasting when I don’t eat anything for a week. I do not have any issue with training etc during this time. I fast 24 hours once a week rest of days I fast for 16-18 hours. I have zero issues with training, working etc.

  2. @Andrea

    What is wrong with you?

I simply was curious as to how fasting would affect him from attending WordCamp.

Please don’t come to WCEU. If I attend, I will show them your comment above and get you removed.

  3. Hello Sarah,

Really excited that WCEU 2017 will take place in Paris.
I feel there might be a confusion as to where exactly it will happen, and that your venue link is wrong, probably because there is another similarly named place in the 13th district that comes up first in Google results.
It was confirmed by Jenny Beaumont that the WordCamp Europe 2017 will take place in Les Docks de Paris, not just “les docks”, and this is just north of Paris near the big Stade de France football stadium, at

    LES DOCKS DE PARIS
50, av. du Président Wilson – 93200 La Plaine Saint-Denis

    The site is at http://www.eurosites.fr/location-salle/paris/quartier/salles-de-formation-a-saint-denis

Just in case people would plan accomodation way ahead, and to avoid having to ship hundreds od stranded people from the south of Paris all the way back up north on that day :-)

  5. Hey, @tareq, thank you so much for bringing this up.

We do take into consideration as much as we possibly can when thiking of dates for WordCamp Europe. We consider this event a global one and we try to be welcoming and accessible for everyone.

Let me shed a bit of light into our decision making process when choosing dates, so maybe everyone can understand a bit better how that happens.

The team needs to organise the event in the first half of the year so that we have a good balance in time with WordCamp US.

As the event grows, the number of venues that can host it shrinks significantly and so do the dates available for it.

This year we were looking at dates from the beginning of May until the end of June. We chose the dates 16-18th of June which have the least clashes with other major tech events, big holidays around the world and most importantly – holidays in France, which might have caused logistical problems for attendees and made some services unavailable.

I’m sincerely hoping that venue availability will allow us to choose dates that don’t clash with Ramadan in the future. In the meantime, I’d really like to hear what would make it easier for you to travel during Ramadan – the WCEU team will do the best we can to help out.

It was lovely to meet you in the US, looking forward to talking again soon!

    • Hello @Petya, thanks for clarifying. I know it’s a really hard work arranging any event as big as WordCamp Europe and you have to take into consideration of lot of things. We, few folks from here wanted to join this grand event for 2 years, but couldn’t. I just wanted to let you guys know there is another thing to consider about among many :)

I didn’t want to bring out religious discussion here, but that was unfortunate. I’ll shoot you an email in details.

Meeting you in WordCamp SF and US was really lovely, hoping to meet you again!

  6. @Tareq

All WordCamps should take into account the Islamic calendar and the holy month of Ramadan. The WordPress community keeps claiming that they are open to people of different faiths but still we can see the hatred being spewed on this very thread. Even europe was once colonized by the early caliphs and now we muslims need to fight for our own rights here.

I would ask the organizers of the European WordCamp to respect muslims and change the schedule accordingly. Having a separate room for prayers and ablution would be good. Another request would be to have separate rooms for men and women during the sessions to avoid mixing of the opposite sexes.

I would also like to thank Brother Carl Hancock for his support of fellow Muslims
