Small Potato Coming Back Again

kwimlogo Small Potato recently announced on his personal blog yesterday that he was coming back to design WordPress themes. Not only that, but he stated he was going to compete with the commercial theme authors. A bold move by Small Potato but if anyone could do it, he could.

Coming back to WordPress, I wanted to design only. Now, I’m going to code too. I’m coming back to WordPress and I’m going to compete with those premium theme clubs and top theme authors. For those who reads my stuff online, I know you saw this a mile a way. Because of how my last site ended, I can’t help it. I have to come back.

I have no doubt that the community will be keeping a close eye on Small Potato to see if he picks up where he left off or if he plans on taking on these theme authors with a new approach. It’s nice to have him back designing in the community again.

  1. I’m a big fan of Small Potato and his work, although I can’t help but be a little skeptical. How long have we been hearing rumors that he’s “coming back” only to be let down again?

Things have changed in the WordPress community and there’s much stiffer competition in the theme market nowadays. Hopefully he can bring something new and unique to the table.

  2. @Benjamin – Given the price was so cheap it was easy for him to do. At todays theme prices, good luck giving refunds to everyone.

@Leland -Yea, I wouldn’t hold my breath on this one. He also says he has a dozen free themes in the works, he just needs to find the time to make them. If he’s doing premium themes, he isn’t going to have the time to churn out a dozen free themes… not of good quality. People’s expectations are higher than they were last time he was around. They expect higher quality themes, code and support and not something that was just thrown together.

  3. Again? :)

I’d be the first one to follow this up… if only this wasn’t published on Kubrick. I mean, if you want to compete with the big fish, you gotta have something more appropriate than the simpliest fishing rod ever.

Somehow I feel that WordPress themes have changed a lot in a few years, and SP will have a lot to learn before to be able to compete… But why not?

  4. Small Potato seems to have done what no-one else in the WordPress space managed, create major controversy that whether you like him or not you still remember and talk about him.

I learnt loads from the guy and owe him alot in terms of my path into wordpress development. Look forward to a more mature and focused small Potato hitting the WP scene, should be fun if nothing else.

  5. I love SP’s themes and wish him luck in coming back. I don’t think I’d be signing up for any membership site that he offers unless it’s a really good deal and he has proven himself by sticking around for at least a year or more.

I do use one of SP’s free themes myself and really like it.

  6. Hey Carl. You’re one of the people I’m gonna have to publicly thank in a post on my blog some day after my come back proves successful. By then, if you’re willing, I’d like you to take a picture of yourself with an I love Small Potato sign. That’s all. I don’t like to ask for much.

  7. If Small Potato wants to come back and be the best theme designer in the WordPress world, he’ll do it. I have no doubt about that. I’ve only seen a handful of others that can compete with his design skills.

I don’t know how good of a developer he is, and being a great developer is a must when it comes to themes these days. We’ll have to wait and see how that plays out.

I’m sure he’ll play to his strengths though, which is design.
