Modern: A Beautiful Free Blog and Portfolio Theme for WordPress

In just one week since its release, the new Modern theme was downloaded nearly 2,700 times from WordPress.org. It was created by WebMan Design, a Slovakia-based company founded by Oliver Juhas. WebMan Design has been selling WordPress themes across multiple marketplaces since 2012 and recently began focusing on producing future-proof themes that meet WordPress.org standards.

Modern is the company’s second free theme on WordPress.org, following the Mustang Lite business theme released last year. It was designed for personal and small business portfolios.

Modern’s bold style incorporates a fullscreen header slideshow that is perfect for showcasing large images with header text. The homepage features your latest blog posts along with an optional sortable portfolio section. The header includes two menu locations for the primary navigation and the social links menu.

All of the customization options for the theme are built into WordPress’ native customizer, including the following:

  • Add your own 1920 × 1080 header image
  • Footer widget area
  • Color picker to set background color, text color, accent color, and accent text color
  • Customize predefined texts on the homepage
  • Typography options for setting logo font, heading font, general text font, font subset, basic font size

Modern offers unique styles for each of WordPress’ default post formats. The demo’s style guide page shows that the theme author took many of the smaller details into consideration, including code formatting, blockquotes, lists, table styles, highlighted text style, image alignment, Jetpack Mosaic galleries and more.

The heart icons you see in the single post meta are powered by the free ZillaLikes plugin from ThemeZilla. Modern includes support for Jetpack to manage the portfolio posts, logo image, and uses its featured content module to power the homepage banner. It also includes support for Schema.org markup and Theme Hook Alliance action hooks.

WebMan Design developed the theme with performance in mind and links to Pingdom results of load tests for the demo site. The demo site takes 1.73s to load and gets a 94/100 performance grade.

  1. I’ve not looked at this new theme from Webman yet but I have used Oliver’s LesPaul premium theme a couple of times and I am very impressed with the way it is built. It also has good contextual help and Oliver responds to support tickets.

    1. Thank you northerwood, I’m glad you are satisfied with my work :) Please do check this free theme and also please check the Mustang (Lite) too. You will be surprised how things moved forward since the LesPaul times ;) My newer themes use a custom built WebMan Amplifier plugin that assures your website uses the best from both WordPress worlds: theme and a plugin to provide awesome content, functionality and look.

  2. A Pingdom test result seems kinda irrelevant since it mostly tests server related issues.

    1. Hey Ryan. To be honest here, I have the most issues regarding with speed with my servers and considering switching the host. Please note that there is no caching or other speed boosting technique applied on the theme demo website (except maybe CDN which is enabled for the whole theme demos network). I use a Speed Booster Pack plugin on the theme demo web, but only things enabled are “Remove query strings” and everything from “Remove junk header tags” section. So, as you can see, no big speed improvements. Just a pure theme (and plugins I use on demo website).

  3. I’ll add this theme to my blog hosting site. It’s a great theme, even though I prefer Tumblr-style themes myself for blog-oriented WordPress sites.

  4. Hi,

Thank you Sarah for writing such a wonderful article about my Modern theme and for featuring it here on WP Tavern! I really appreciate it and have never thought I would read something about myself on a website I personally read regularly. Very cool! :)

    Regards,

    Oliver

    1. Hi Matt! Thank you both for this comment and your review at WPORG! I try my best to follow “code is poetry” mantra :) Keeping the theme code readable and understandable for me as well as for other developers I hope.

  6. Thanks for writing this article to introduce Webman’s Modern theme. I searched for a theme for days (really). I wanted something with stylish design layout, and that did not follow a yearly subscription model. I tested out the Mustang theme and am impressed with its functions, ease of use and flexibility. The Webman site seems to exude style, and the developer responds quickly! I’m a fan.

    1. I bought the Mustang theme a week ago after using the free version for a few weeks. I’m impressed by the clean design and the GPL license allowing use on multiple sites, and the lack of yearly fees. Webman Design themes are no more expensive that the “do-it-all” themes. And because of the excellent support, I’ll be happy to buy a license for each site I make. Good work and generous business practices deserve customer support.

  7. Really neat theme for those who just want to write. I know a few starter blogs that would love this. I have a question about the ZillaLikes, how is that built into the theme so seamlessly? Any tips?
