Format Addresses Correctly for Search Engines with the WordPress Address Schema Plugin

Schema.org provides a standard way of marking up structured data so that it can be easily found by search engines and properly structured for other forms of data communication, i.e. JSON. Search engines such as Bing, Google, Yahoo! and others make use of this “shared markup vocabulary” to correctly identify the content on web pages.

Schema.org is now an expansive reference for how to mark up all kinds of information, including events, recipes, reservations, human anatomy, medications, property, etc., with new categories being added regularly.

WP Address Schema is a new plugin that takes on the task of formatting addresses correctly for local businesses. The plugin makes it easy for you to comply with Schema.org’s standard for displaying the address of a physical business or branch of an organization.

Once installed, you can add addresses under a new menu in the admin:

You can also manage multiple addresses for use in different areas on your site. Once you’ve set up your addresses, you can place them on your site using a unique shortcode, template tag, or the bundled address schema widget.

Address schemas are then outputted with the correct markup:

The WP Address Schema plugin currently supports the following fields and will be adding more in the future:

  • Company Name
  • Address Line 1
  • Address Line 2
  • Address Line 3
  • Town/City
  • State/County
  • Country
  • Postal/Zip Code
  • Telephone
  • Fax
  • Opening Hours

Creating the proper HTML markup for an address is likely to be a supreme pain for many WordPress users. This plugin takes all the guesswork out of it and keeps you up to date with the format that search engines use to find businesses. If you’re not yet formatting the address on your website with Schema.org standards in mind, installing WP Address Schema from WordPress.org is an easy way to get started.

  1. Hi Lynn! Yes this plugin is mostly for businesses who are posting a physical address on their websites. Any kind of business or organization that posts an address on their site could benefit from it, I imagine. The point is to be found by search engines.

    • The compatibility info on the plugin repo is a joke. I’ve built plugins for WP 2.x that still work fine in 3.9. I’m certainly not going to bump my plugin’s version number just because I need to update the “compatibility” section on the plugin repo and force users to download an update with zero code changes.

        • To me, that is just wrong. If I’m going to make changes, even a single-character change, that means that the overall plugin has changed and should have it’s version number bumped. Call me crazy, but I’m obsessive about this sort of thing. It’d eat away at me knowing that there’s multiple copies of my plugins floating around with different code but identical versions numbers.

Now, if we were to have a method of changing this via the “assets” folder like the banners, I’d be fine with that. Realistically, we just need a simple control panel to change it that’s outside of the plugin folder itself where many of us track changes religiously.

Even with all that said, I’m not sure I actually want to go through 30 plugins and update the compatibility number on them.
