I may be the first to show my uneasiness, but as an Easy Digital Downloads and AffiliateWP subscriber (on both highest plans), my immediate action is to cancel the renewals and seek viable alternatives (a research study I am currently doing).

Awesome Motive at least for me stands as a company that even thus endeavour to do any good, shortly after they acquire and release new updates, those gradually include bloat that affects performance, support is non-existent as far as my dreadful experience went with MonsterInsights (which I gladly also cancelled some time back), so I am almost certain we can also expect a dashboard full of notices which I find it quite disturbing and intrusive, this not to mention price skyrocketing according to moon-phases.

However, I do wish Pippin Williamson all the best in his future endeavours.

Can confirm, MonsterInsights after acquisition totally messed up the Google Analytics plugin upto an unusable state. We replaced it everywhere since then.

It looks as though the smaller and even mid-sized businesses related to WordPress products and services are being snatched up by the bigger players. I have yet to really see products and services get better, including support. If anyone has an example of where things did work out better, please post it.

I use EDD (plus the Pro pass set of addon plugins) and AffiliteWP, also with all the package add-ons, this concerns me greatly. In fact, I’m also concerned with the growing list of acquisitions. I’m wondering if some companies are deciding to get out due to the direction of WP…makes one think. Anyway, I guess this is just part of the WP-related business.

As a side note, I am happy for Pippin because after a long-run of developing his products and maintaining them, I’m sure he is glad to be able to move on.

Are there any good Easy Digital Downloads alternatives out there? Something clean and free?

After Restrict Content Pro has been acquired, I stopped using it. Lots of extensions stopped working and the dedicated changelog page has stopped being updated.

I feel EDD is going to go the same route. I have a business built entirely using EDD and also a lot of custom code, custom extensions and a specific setup, and I’m afraid that going forward with this will cause issues.

Has anyone thought about forking EDD?

Congratulations to Pippin and the team; hopefully, with this acquisition comes many improvements. AffiliateWP is a solid product 🙂

Another bad sign for the ecosystem a medium sized firm with okay products selling out to a firm with good marketing and rubbish products

Great article. Great discussion. I have one client site using EDD… luckily it’s just 1 site. I feel bad for those who have their businesses built on it though – I’d be crapping my pants. I feel so bad for the employees – that’s a rough position to be put in. I had met Kyle Maurer years back at a WordCamp and he seemed like a genuinely nice guy. I hope everyone from Sandhill finds happiness with A.M. Fingers crossed for all!

I feel like I’m forever running away from Awesome Motive. Ever since they screwed over original Optinmonster lifetime customers I have moved onto other services. But they just can’t stop buying things! This is sad news for the industry.

Their spammy blogs drive me nuts the way they do 10 Best Plugins to Do This or That. And what a surprise, their own plugins are always the “best”. It’s such a shady practice.
