Adding Google Custom Search Is Easy

nice2alllogo Are you fed up with the way the default search works on your WordPress powered site? You’re not alone. As was discussed in the forum thread I just linked to, Google Custom Search was brought up as a way to substitute the WordPress search engine with one powered by Google. I thought about adding Google CSE to WPTavern.com but until I get a bunch of complaints that the search sucks or I find myself not being able to quickly find what I’m looking for despite typing in a descriptive query, I probably won’t go through with it. However, Lyndi of Nice2All.com did go through with it and she shared her experience in this blog post.

After giving the matter a lot of thought I decided to add a Google Custom Search Engine to this site. Initially I thought this would entail a lot of work but I was pleasantly surprised. It went very quickly and in fact it was very easy to do.

Nice to see that it won’t be hard to do if I ever decide to add it to WPTavern.

  1. It’s debatable on a vanilla install of WordPress. But for the Tavern, with some of the content in WordPress, and some in vBulletin, it makes sense to use Google CSE so that you can get search results from the whole site at the same time.

  2. Installing the CSE was easy but as far as I am concerned the jury is still out with regards to the question if it is really needed on a WordPress blog. I am not fully convinced yet. Maybe the difference between a CSE and the default WordPress search will be more evident on blogs with big databases. Thanks for the link.

  3. Good points about being able to search both a forum and blog this way. I have two sites which have both forum and WordPress installations in them and it would make a lot of sense to share the same search tool rather than them having to operate separately from each other.

I wonder if bbPress and WordPress can share the same search results?

  4. @JLeuze – You make a good point. There is no way to search both the forum and the site since it’s two separate systems and this would bridge the gap. Now you’ve given me a reason to give it a try.

@Lyndi – Well, that doesn’t sound good. I’m looking forward to your published results though. It couldn’t be any worst than the default offering right?

@Ryan – Not sure about the search between bbPress and WordPress but Josh ended up giving me a reason to install GCSE.
