7 Free WordPress Themes Based on Twenty Thirteen

WordPress 3.8 development is marching forward and we should see a beta very soon. Included in this upcoming release is Twenty Fourteen, a new WordPress default theme. Twenty Fourteen is a magazine / blogging style theme. As it is somewhat niche, there will still be room for Twenty Thirteen and others. Before we add a new default theme into the mix, let’s check out a few interesting spin offs of Twenty Thirteen.

We’ve collected seven free themes based on the default theme. Some of them are actual child themes and others were created using Twenty Thirteen as a base or inspiration.

McKinley

Created by the folks at ThemeTrust, McKinley is a blog theme based on Twenty Thirteen. It sports a minimalist centered layout and has support for all your standard post formats.

2013 Blue

2013 Blue is a tastefully blue rendition of the default theme. It acts as a child theme to Twenty Thirteen. The 2013 Blue theme was created by WordPress designer Joen Asmussen, who also recently helped to redesign the new WordPress dashboard screen.

r2d2 is a child theme of Twenty Thirteen, created by Robert Dall. He said that while he adored the typography and the responsive design of Twenty Thirteen, he wanted to created something darker as well as keep the post titles above the content. You can check out a live demo on his blog.

Holi was created by the folks at Themato Soup and is hosted on wordpress.org. It’s a Twenty Thirteen child theme that comes in nine different color schemes. The theme was built using Sass, so it’s easy to add more color schemes if you want to further customize it.
