WordPress.tv Adds Its First German Presentation: Konstantin Obenland on Underscores

WordPress.tv added its first German language video today. Konstantin Obenland’s “Underscores: Ein Startertheme Für Alle” presentation from WordCamp Hamburg is, surprisingly, the only German video to make it to WordPress.tv so far. Obenland is a code wrangler at Automattic and has also worked extensively with the default WordPress themes. His presentation covers the history and future of Underscores and its influence on theme development.

The slides for the presentation are also linked from its listing on WordPress.tv.

If you’re multilingual, one of the ways you can contribute to WordPress is by captioning and subtitling videos. Each video on WordPress.tv has a unique URL labeled “Subtitle this Video,” which lets you add subtitles in one of nine available languages. For example, if you click on Obenland’s video subtitles link, you’ll find the guided process for using the tools at amara.org to add your subtitles. This is a little-known way that you can contribute to WordPress and help the community share its knowledge across languages.

WordPress.tv doesn’t appear to have an easy way to search for videos by language, as the search bar isn’t an effect way of narrowing them down. While guessing at the URLs, I found that WordPress.tv has 61 videos in Japanese, 56 in French, 38 in Spanish, eight in Russian, two in Norwegian. There are likely many more languages represented there but they’re not easy to discover.

As the WordPress project is adding major internationalization improvements to the 4.0 release, users who are new to the software will have an easier time getting on board. They will be in search for resources to help them get started and learn more. Right now, the vast majority of official WordPress learning resources are in English. In the future it will be exciting to see how the project adapts and changes to accommodate a growing international, multilingual community.

  1. This post is not entirely true: for years there were German videos online at WordPress.tv from WordCamp Germany 2009 which was held in Jena. At least in 2013 they were still online. At this time I couldn’t found them again. Why they were removed – if at all? – I really don’t know.

However, there were for many years WordCamp videos online in German language at WordPress.tv :)

  2. I’m a moderator on wordpress.tv and this post is pretty timely actually. We have recently put out the call for more mods with language skills, and have been lucky to add moderators from Germany, Spain, and Netherlands. Expect more international WordCamps this year on wordpress.tv!

Thanks for pointing that out. We’ve added navigation to the sidebar on the WordCamp videos page to make browsing videos by language a bit easier.
