Updates to VaultPress Result In 25%-90% Faster Restore Builds

VaultPress has announced that a recent update to their backup systems have reduced the time required to build restore files by anywhere from 25%-90%. Before the change, VaultPress stored each SQL row in a separate file in its replicated file system which slowed down restore times.

Before the VaultPress update, we were storing each SQL row in a separate file in our replicated filesystem. That slowed our restore times, because each table had to be regenerated from potentially millions of individual files.

Now we store table dumps and changes, building a restore typically involves far fewer files per table.

  1. I think this post really should include a disclosure about the shared ownership of WPTavern and VaultPress. I think a lot of readers – including myself – don’t like to read through something, and start thinking “this sounds a lot like an advert – who’s writing this, and why?”.

  2. I am looking for a good backup system. I have tried about 5 so far. All of them have problems. They time out due to scripts running too long. They have conflicts with other plugins that make their dashboard’s show errors.
    If this service gets around all of that I would like to buy it. I looked a the VaultPress site but it didn’t address how it does the backup, although it is a plugin.
    Is this a plugin that will be subject to the same errors and other things that its competitiors are?
    Or is this something not on my host that just copies the site files, like an ftp.
    The minimal package is 5 bucks a month, 4 dollars less than the closest competitors and they also store it so no Drop box account needed but.

    All I need is a no B.S. backup. If this is a set and forget system than I want it. I’ve been working on my site for about 5 years and still consider myself a newbie. Am I smart enough to get backups withour errors and warnings and . . .

    • It definitely won’t be subject to the same errors. VaultPress can connect to your site via SSH, which is the preferred method for it to directly access both the files and the database, or via SFTP/FTP for the files and MySQL for the database.

      VaultPress uses one of the above methods to directly access your files and database, determine the changes (often sent via a ping, like a post being published or updated), and then transfer only the changed data to its servers.

      All processing and storage is then done as describe in the announcement linked to in the article above. Because the processing is done on VaultPress’s servers, and your server only need to worry about transferring the changed data only, it should never timeout, and it really shouldn’t conflict with anything else either.

      They recently launched a 5-day free trial, as mentioned above, so there’s no reason not to try it. :)

    • I don’t know which one you have tried but if you have not tried myRepono I can recommend this. I am running this on several of my client’s sites (Some are >250mb in size) and has proven to be a very reliable backup system for me.
      They’re offering a free trial (you are given a £5 credit) and then it is on a top up basis
      I am having 21 sites there so far and the total monthly cost is less than a tenner
