Tracks is a new free theme in the WordPress Themes Directory with a unique design that utilizes panoramic featured images. The homepage displays recent posts and a short excerpt for each, with big, bold images alternating down the page.
If you’re looking for a simple theme with very few options to configure, then Tracks is a good pick. It has just a handful of customization options built into the WordPress customizer, which means it will take less than a minute to make your site look like the demo.
You can upload a logo image, set the navigation menu, add site title and tagline, and elect to use a static front page. Apart from those options, the design is set for you.
The only caveat with using this theme is that you’ll need to make sure you upload a large featured image for each post in order to keep the homepage looking colorful. The single posts page also uses that image for a panoramic display at the top of the content.
The author bio section allows each author on the site to display links to social profiles after each post. This is configured in the “Edit Profile” page in the admin.
Tracks is 100% responsive. If you resize the live demo page, you’ll see that the content responds nicely to various screen sizes. It was designed to work well on well on desktops, tablets and phones. It uses fitvids.js to make sure that videos in your posts are also responsive to devices.
The theme does not include any widget areas. As you can tell from the short list of options, Tracks is a design-specific theme focused on blog content and images. What you cannot see from the demo is that the theme is SEO-friendly with semantic link anchors and optimized title tags. It also incorporates ARIA-roles and follows basic accessibility guidelines.
Tracks was created by Ben Sibley and is available for free from WordPress.org. Documentation can be found on the author’s website and includes instructions for customizing the theme with a child theme.
