CreativeMarket, one of the first WordPress theme marketplaces to fully support the GPL license has been acquired by Autodesk, for an undisclosed amount. The marketplace sells everything from themes to templates to fonts. The site became one of the first marketplaces to be advertised on WordPress.org after they announced they would only sell WordPress themes that are 100% GPL. It’s worth noting that Matt Mullenweg is an investor of CreativeMarket.
According to the announcement, the entire team will join Autodesk with the company’s co-founders moving to San Francisco to continue their goal of selling creative products.
What does this mean for the community? For customers, it means access to even more high quality content at affordable prices, as we’re able to grow more quickly. For shop owners, it means we’ll have a larger platform to get your products in front of an even larger audience of customers.
The acquisition is just one of a few that’s happened within the WordPress community as of late. The most recent acquisition was Crowd Favorite acquiring Pixel Jar. Does this mean we’ll start seeing modeling products and three-dimensional themes for sale on CreativeMarket or will the marketplace expand to include more categories of products? Only time will tell.
What do you think of the acquisition? Does it make sense to you? Let us know in the comments.
Interesting acquisition.
Our hope is that they expand their product offerings to include premium plugins in a non-exclusive agreement.
